Energy Star indicates less water and power consumption by your dishwasher. Saving energy reduces your carbon footprint. An ENERGY STAR certified dishwasher uses 12% less energy and 30% less water on average, than a standard model.
There are some set parameters that define Energy Star rating for a dishwasher. The two key parameters are 1. Energy consumption kWh/ year and 2. Water consumption Litres/ Cycle.
Your new Energy Star dishwasher could use about 200 kWh / year or 0.8 to 0.9 kWh/ load. And about 10-13 litres of water per use.

The other parameters or key features are:
Soil Sensors:
The sensors will check the water turbidity (The level of dirt in water inside will help to sense the soil level). It will also check the water temperature and decide how much water will be needed for the wash cycle.
It could be laser or LED light technology to sense the above parameters. The sensors work continuously and not just in the beginning. Which helps to give most efficient cleaning using least water and energy!
Improved Water Filtration:
The improved water filtration process removes food soil from the wash water. This process increases efficiency of water and detergent mix to clean better through out the cycle.
Efficient Jet System:
More efficient jets use less energy to spray detergent and water over the dishes.
Dish Rack Design:
Innovative dish rack designs improve cleaning and efficiency. The adjustable holders make it more convenient to place and hold the dishes properly.
Internal Water Heater:
Some latest internal water heaters or booster heaters boost the water temperature exactly when needed. This improves the wash and drying efficiency.
