What happens if you forget to change your furnace filter? For a short period, let’s say couple of months, it won’t damage anything much. But for a longer period, keeping the furnace without replacing filters can cause multiple issues.
The issues that may occur if you forget to change the furnace filter are:
- Filter Clogging
- Furnace overheat and malfunction
- Short Cycling of furnace
- Health Issues
The filters are placed in the return air duct before the air enters the furnace. The return air duct is bringing the air from entire house back to the furnace. While bringing it back, it does also bring dust particles. Over a long period, the particles will clog the filter. And the clogged filter will cause less air flow to the furnace.
The lesser air flow will cause the furnace body to overheat and malfunction. With the limit switch inside, the furnace will stop functioning every time it overheats and restart again after some time. This issue is also called Short Cycling.
The clogged filter can also cause health issues. The dirty filter will not let enough fresh air enter the system and you will not have a healthy fresh air to breath. This may cause allergic reactions, sinus congestion and can impact people with asthma.
